Earth Day 2014!

“A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his children.” —John James Audubon

It's Earth Day 2014!  There are many events to commemorate this day and of course the Google Doodle is tied to the occasion.  Even NASA has gotten into it with a brilliant campaign combining society's favorite thing of the moment, selfies!  For those interested, upload a selfie to Twitter, Instagram or Google + using the hashtag #globalselfie and NASA will compile a worldwide selfie image.  Sounds pretty awesome, though it's doubtful you'll be actually to spot yours.  But great strategy!

Anyway, some going green initiatives that I've seen gain adoption in my adult years are the following:
  • Recycling
  • Public transit
  • Reusable bags
  • Reduction of litter

Since childhood, recycling has always been a part of life.  However, it's been awesome to see recycling receptacles not just at home but also at schools, offices, airports, and restaurants.  Now granted, there's even more that can be done, but we're making significant strides by at least making recycling visible and encouraging.  Is it still lax in some areas?  Yes but it's the progress that counts!

I live in a pretty large metropolis where public transit is a way of life even though there is still a car dependency (and necessity to completely navigate the area).  To offset the downsides of that, there's a huge bike share program in effect that has been successful along with the implementation of bicycle lanes on main roads and high usage (and maintenance) of trails.  I was reading a Forbes article that discusses independence from the auto industry in America.  I think in larger cities, we can get close, though I don't know how completely free of automobiles we really can be.  Read a related Forbes article here.

Finally, the adoption of reusable bags.  I've definitely seen this initiative take off in my region.  Just five years ago, I can recall reusable bags being available but not necessarily widely used.  Now, I've observed people actually opting to purchase a reusable bag when they've forgotten theirs in lieu of using a plastic bag.  Awesome!  Personally, I love the idea of a reusable bag because I just don't like a lot of plastic bags laying around.  Which leads me to...

Littering, or rather lack of it!  I remember as a child feeling so sad to see trash in ponds and other natural habitats.  Oh, the anger I felt to see someone throw trash from their car or just leave it in other public spaces.  Unfortunately, there are just some areas/people for whom this negative behavior will be harder to change.  The bright side is people really seem to just not litter.  Perhaps it's the availability of trash and recycling receptacles or perhaps public shaming (just kidding...sort of) but whatever the motivation, littering appears to be on the decline.

As I reflect on Earth Day 2014, I'm happy about the progress and intrigued on what other things I can do to help preserve our lovely planet.  The planet has so many beautiful aspects (lands, oceans, skies) that it's time to show love and help heal.  Cue "Heal the World" music... :-)

How about you?  What are your thoughts on Earth Day?  Any plans for #EarthDay2014?  Chime in!

A little bit of Mambo...

OK, I know I haven’t recently been speaking much about my fitness journey lately.  Not because I’ve not been working out but because I modified my routine due to my schedule and recovering from a mild injury.  It’s been great!  The cool thing about working out is that you don’t necessarily need the studio or gym experience.  That environment definitely helps but you can do it your own.  Thanks to the training I did in January,   I now know how to plank and squat jump properly.  LOL  Anyway, what prompted this post today is that I got to reconnect with of my favorite Zumba instructors today during my lunch hour.  It was awesome to be back in the mix of dancing full out (this location is by the far the most visually beautiful studio in DC that I’ve seen!).  My instructor (and others) even noticed my fitness progress.  Summer, here I come.  World, here I come.  Watch me work :-)  The whole point of this is no matter where you are in a journey, whether it’s achieving fitness goals like I’m doing or other aspirations, it’s okay to give yourself props.  Don’t get so focused and caught on the end goal that you don’t take note of the progress you are making.  In fact, it’s that progress that’s going to keep you motivated.   Not to mention, when you see that fat disappearing and muscle definition appearing or those clothes fitting differently, you are going to feel amazing--physically and mentally.  Goals are meant to be met and exceeded.  In the meantime, embrace the journey!

High heels, high price

High heels are among us. They have long been the symbols of power, confidence, and fashion. You can not open a catalogue without seeing the cutest outfit paired with a high (uncomfortable looking) heel. However, for all of these fleeting things we are given, much is given up. That’s right ladies; high heels do a lot of things for us including damage the muscles in our legs.

Now first let me begin by saying that I am NOT against high heels. I simply like to mix my style up between flats and heels. I am kind of tall without heels so I am more of a cute flats/low heel girl. When I do incorporate high heels, it’s to 1) embrace my inner glamazon by going all out on my look or 2) to stand above the haters/detractors/everybody else. I won’t lie, it does feel good to tower sometimes—except when it’s with a guy that I’m interested in (though it kind of works when it’s a guy I’m not feeling as much). But I’ve digressed. The whole point is that the constant wearing of high heels really does lead to a wear and tear of the muscles. When I think about the reasons I don’t wear high heels, the answer always has to do with pain and/or discomfort.

Here are the facts:
Constant and prolonged wearing of high heels (looking at you diva fashionistas) weaken the calf muscles and alter the shape of the Achilles tendon. Have you ever heard of an athlete being sidelined because of an injury to their Achilles? It is a major injury and while wearing high heels may not debilitate you for months, it can lead to problems down the line. The changes in your legs affect the ankle's natural resting position. Additionally, ill-fitting shoes can also lead to foot conditions such as corns and bunions, which will make wearing ANY shoe uncomfortable.

So what does this mean? Nobody is saying that you can't ever wear high heels. As with everything in life, moderation is the key. Don’t walk up all those flights of stairs or across town in your heels, wear cute flats or sneakers. Don't wear those power heels every day, switch it up with flats, etc. Whatever you do, do NOT even think of exercising in heels (you just look ridiculous--yes even you Beyonce). Some of you may have visions of white sneakers and high-top socks but this is 2010. Shoe companies are with it and design really sporty (and foot-healthy) shoes. Check out footsmart.com or aerosoles.com to see what I’m talking about (as well as some *haute* flats).

The research is out there--be informed:
